This month I will be releasing a weekly halloween special! And we are starting with the top 5 most creepy medical treatments in history.
5. Corpse Medicine
In darker times we humans believed that consuming a particular part of a corpse, would have beneficials effects for that part of our body.
Eating grinded skull would help with headaches, grinded teeth with tooth ache, but the real panacea, the favourite ingredient always has been our precious blood. It was claimed to give you the vitality and the strength of the person from which you where consuming it. Therefore the blood of young men, and virgin were highly priced.
4. Hemiglossectomy
The hemiglossectomy was preformed in thousands of patients in 18-19e century, as a cure for stuttering. Before being abandoned by “doctors", because it was to dangerous.
You see, a hemiglossectomy didn’t cure stuttering. And on top of that, even more important, there was a very significant risk of damaging several arteries and veins in the tongue. Which would mean a swift death for most patients.
3. Mercury
One of the most ridiculously treatments was the usage of mercury. An seriously poisonous chemical element. Which was prescribe for hundreds of years as a ”cure” for almost everything, but mostly for syfilis.
Of course it didn't cure anything, and it kept piling up in your body. The levels got higher and higher, and patients started having more, and more symptoms. This terrible practise went on till as late as the 1940’s, when penicilline was invented.
2. The lobotomy
During a lobotomy, a piercer was hammered through one of your eye sockets into your brain. After which the piercer was moved from side to side to separate the prefrontal cortex from the rest of your brain.
Psychiatrist believed that this could reduce psychiatric symptoms. But of course it didn’t. Patients lost spontaneity, self-awareness and intelligence. They were trapped inside their body, unable to express themselves. A ghost of the person they once had been.
1. Trepanation
In former times people thought that weird behaviour was caused by evil spirits, and that they needed to be released. This was done by drilling a hole into the skull. This “treatment” was called trepanation.
Most of the patients would survive this "treatment", but they were not cured. Their trauma only got bigger, and their behaviour got worse. Therefore they were ultimately banned or killed.
As barbaric as trepanation sounds, it was very common, and about 10% of all the stone age skulls contain the holes.
